Subject: Testimony against a VETO of Bill 101 ` '

Dear Council members representing Big Island,
PLEASE OVERRIDE MAYOR KIM'S VETO OF BILL 101.
I am one of many with a business that sees eco-tourists stay in East Hawaii due to a
continued interest from people around the world to see our beautiful island. They
bring with them tens of thousands of dollars that they spend in our community. For
many of us and for our visitors, it is no longer acceptable or 'cool' to witness harsh,
dead brown streaks of grass and as if this is 'care' for our parks, roadways etc. This
shows up as an ugly mark on the landscape. Further it has now been shown in court
that there is clear and present evidence that Round Up is linked to pancreatic
cancer.
We are looking for vision from our leadership. We want our Mayor to respect when
the people of the Big Island speak out. We want to see a promise of healthier
environments for our children, our county workers, our pets and ourselves.
Work by many concerned citizens over several years has been undertaken to
educate our community and our Council members on the clear and present dangers
of continuing to use toxic herbicides ('Round Up' etc) in our parks, gardens and
landscapes.
There are law suits and liabilities the County of Hawaii continues to risk if the
practice of using Round Up and other toxic herbicides continues. Now that you've
been informed, please do not overlook your responsibility to end this dangerous
practice. Begin new sustainable programs of zero-scaping roadsides and creating
natural weed barriers instead of relying on toxic chemicals to control weeds.
Why continue to bring shame to our beautiful island by continuing to put keiki,
workers and others at risk? Why display disregard for the will of the people ? Why
bring continue to show lack of care of the landscape? Mowing and mulching are
better practices than making soil in our playgrounds, parks, gardens and roadways
toxic and dangerous.
Shame Mayor Harry Kim! The Bill 101 is worthy of your respect.
Councilwoman Ashley Kierkiewicz -the evidence is clear. Please vote 'YES' in
favor of an override.
PLEASE OVERRIDE THE VETOE OF BILL 101.
