TESTIMONY IN SUPPORT OF OVERRIDING BILL 101'S VETO
Relating to Herbicide Use a
Aloha Chair Aaron S. Y. Chung, Vice Chair Karen Eoff,Members of the Hawai`i County Council,
My name is Jun Shin. I am the Environmental Justice Action Committee Chair for the Young
Progressives Demanding Action(YPDA), an organization whose members work toward building a
Hawai`i that is just, equitable, and sustainable through community organizing and issue advocacy. YPDA
is in support of overriding the veto on Bill 101,Relating to Herbicide Use,which would restrict the
spraying of toxic pesticides in Hawai`i County Parks and Roadways.
YPDA sincerely appreciates the Council taking time to hear public testimony, do the appropriate research,
and ultimately make the decision to pass Bill 101 prior to the veto. We ask you to reaffirm your resolve,
and do the right thing once more. By overriding the Mayor's veto and allowing Bill 101 to pass into law,
Hawaii County can lead the way in protecting the public from toxic herbicides in places like our parks
and roads. Creating an organic, sustainable framework for the rest of Hawai`i to follow either county by
county or through the Legislature and the Executive Branch. Please use your votes to override.
