HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0489.773 2018-2020 From: Sherri Thal To: Council Testimony Subject: Please pass bill 101!Overturn Mayor Kim"s veto! Date: Monday,January 06,2020 11:29:46 PM Aloha Honorable Councilmembers, We are facing extinction on our planet. Sure, the planet may survive, but its inhabitants may not. The use of herbicides contributes to the demise of humans and animals alike. It is time to start nurturing our Mother Earth and to stop using herbicides in our public areas in Hawaii. I spent my formative years in the San Francisco Bay Area, and when I was in High School, in 1981,Alameda and Santa Clara Counties aerial sprayed Malathion to eradicate the Medfly invasion. In 1992 I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer which had gone undetected for 8-10 years. In 1994, my sister was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease, an auto-immune disorder that affects the thyroid. She was later diagnosed with Breast cancer. We cannot prove that the Malathion contact was the cause of our cancer and disease, but I can only speculate that the exposure may have added fuel to the Cancer's fire in our bodies. Does Hawaii want to be responsible for contributing to illness, or does Hawaii want to be a leader in embarking on a new path to survival and wellness of our Mother Earth and its inhabitants? To me,the choice is obvious! Let's be part of the solution and ban herbicides in our beautiful Public spaces in Hawaii. Councilmembers, you've already voted to do this once. Please stay strong, and override the Mayor's veto of bill 101. Please PASS bill 101. Mahalo and Aloha, Sherri Thal, Keaau, HI Comm. Nig, 11 `1t Ref. To: COMO Ref. Date JAN - 8.2020'
