Subject: Please override mayors veto of Bill 101 and reinstate pesticide regulation on county land
Date: Tuesday,January 07,2020 5:48:12 AM
Aloha Hawaii County Council,
As a Hawaii resident(Waikoloa),a mother/grandmother,a former
Co-President of the Washington Environmental Council,a former Board
Member of the Washington Toxics Coalition(now Toxic-Free Future),and E':4
an environmental litigator,I strongly urge you to reinstate Bill 101
re the County's application/use of pesticides. The numerous exemptions
and special conditions that were incorporated into the bill address
any/all objections, leaving only the critical protection of public
health and safety, the protection of the aina, the protection of our
marine life, and the protection of animals, birds, beneficial insects,
etc.,as the mandate of the bill.
You obviously had sufficient persuasive testimony during your original
tv
consideration of the bill to cause you to pass this legislation, which
was an excellent decision. Regrettably,Mayor Kim does not share your
intention to protect public health and safety at this level, does not
intend to embrace a more proactive approach to vegetation and pest
management. Please do not let his unfortunate choice(vetoing your
legislation)dissuade you from continuing to support the enlightened
premises of this legislation by overriding his veto.
Mahalo for your consideration of my testimony,
Sherilyn Wells
