Howsit? I'm Lilli Gross-a kapuna from North Kohala. I've lived here twice; once from 1977-1982., and this time since
2002. Kohala is my home for better or worse ( MY worse usually!) and love every acre or hectare of it.
During this time I have observed, monitored and collected photos of roadsides, fence lines, under shrubbery and at
parks where Roundup has been and is being sprayed regularly.
What I've found is it doesn't work.
Really.
It does NOT kill the weeds intended. It burns their midsection, causing the roots to root down deeper for water and
become thick and entangled. Impossible to eradicate.
1 moved here the year after Roundup was introduced here. Their claims of not killing the crops and only the weeds, not
going into the groundwater or into the soil and poisoning it sounded like BS to me then and found to be out and out lies
now.
1977 was also the year after the sugar plantation on this side packed up and left.We were depressed then,with only
one hotel, lots of unemployed workers and thousands of acres of"cane grass". Soon cattle were introduced but keeping
the thick serrated grasses under control was and still is virtually impossible.
I've found that the direction of the spray from the truck is a straight shot right to the middle of the plant and turns it
beige, while the bottom and root remains very much alive and thriving.
It also makes those elephant grasses taller then those around them that are either mowed or grazed. Some call them
"super weeds" as they are immune to the glyphosate. There are areas of ground cover—which is usually a creeping
plant—growing to heights of 12 ft or more,the roots exposed and the green sprayed regularly. Returning after a good
rain pattern.
I have photos documenting all of this. The DOT is wasting money on poison that doesn't kill what's intended.
Inflicting schoolyard gardeners like Lee Johnson with non-Hoskins lymphoma. A shadow of a man who sat down with
the DOT last summer. His was the first big win against Monsanto that proved his cancer came from glyphosate.
Anyway, I have an appt with the mayor on the day after Christmas at 10:00 am. 1 would love it if you folks would come.
