Subject: Herbicide Ban Bill 101
Aloha Council members,
I am in support of overriding the Mayor's veto of the herbicide ban and passing Bill 101. I have seen the clear
evidence of research done on Roundup (glyphosate) that shows the negative impacts to mammals, especially
young mammals (children). Research shows that herbicides like Roundup cause cancer among other problems.
Related research correlates an increase in children with brain abnormalities to an increase in the use of
herbicides on school and playgrounds in the U.S.
I have lived in many U.S. states and was appalled at how much Roundup and other herbicide is used in public
places on Hawaii island with NO warning signs to the application date. I also have heard SO MANY stories of
dogs and cats with cancer. Animals whose feet and noses are not protected from recently sprayed areas.
Consider how many of our keiki like to run barefoot when at the park. There are many alternatives for
landscape/grounds staff to use that are non-toxic.
Another point is that everything we put on the land ends up in the groundwater and ocean. We are poisoning our
islands` drinking water and coral reef and nearshore marine life as well.
Let us be a leader for the state and country and do the right thing for our community. Please override the
Mayor's veto and pass Bill 101.
Mahalo for your time and consideration,
Ilene Grossman
