Aloha,
Here is my testimony;
Affordable housing on the Big Island of Hawaii near our work is critical. Due to
regulatory delays and Land Use matters housing for purchase under the County's
affordable housing is out of reach for many of my clients.
A local developer, Lulana Gardens, LLC,has proposed a private grant program to assist
several of my buyers to purchase a home for their families. The developer has filed a
request with the Department of Housing for consideration under the County of Hawaii's
201 H program to expedite the approval process to begin delivering critically needed
family homes to my clients. I encourage the County Council to give serious consideration
to a grant program to assist our local families with home ownership.
I,also, encourage this Council as provided in HRS 343 -201 H to expedite the processing
of Lulana Gardens, LLC request to move forward under the 2010 Final Environmental
Impact Statement as approved and published on November S, 2010. The 201 H
application provided to the Department of Housing allows Lulana Gardens to
immediately restart construction on affordable homes to be immediately delivered to
our local families.The developer, Lulana Gardens, LLC, is providing down payment
assistance grants,which will lower the cost of homes to my local clients. This saves
driving time,increases family life and provides a safe secure environment near their
work place. Many of our Hotel workers have to ride public transportation to get to work.
I know that Hawaii has become expensive to work and live in and we are having our local
families move to the mainland because they cannot find affordable housing.
This is a critical need that we can help families with is now.
I encourage you to consider an assistance program as suggested by Councilwoman
Ashley Kierkiewicz
