SUBJECT: Report of Attendance at the Mahi`ai a Ola—Farm to Table Celebration
In accordance with HRS §92.2.5(e), I report my attendance along with that of Council
Members Matt Kaneali`i-Kleinfelder and Rebecca Villegas, at the Mahi`ai a Ola—Farm to Table
Celebration and award ceremony for the "Mahi`ai Matchup"held on February 7, 2020 at
the Mauna Lani Beach Club, sponsored by Kamehameha Schools and The Kohala
Center.
Kamehameha Schools and The Kohala Center have partnered to create Mahi`ai a Ola; an
initiative to support local farmers, increase agricultural education and provide innovative
solutions to improve our island's food security. Working together,they have supported a
successful agricultural business plan competition with a 5-year ,rent-free land lease and a$10,000
prize, other scholarship opportunities and creative networking projects that seek solutions
within our agriculture sector. This year's winner is Mana `Olena, an East Hawaii farm
business operated by Richards Kodani and `ohana, growing certified organic orange and black
`olena(turmeric) and conventional `ulu. It was a great event celebrating Hawaii Island
agriculture.
HRS §92.2.5(e) states that two or more members of a board, but less than a quorum,may attend
an informational meeting or presentation on matters relating to office board duties, including a
community meeting,provided that the meeting or presentation is not specifically and exclusively
organized for or directed toward members of the board, and that the board members shall report
their attendance and the matters presented and discussed that related to official board business.
