REQUEST: Please prepare a resolution to accept a donation valued at approximately$1,800.00 from Share Our Stregnth to cover travel expenses. B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): Share Our Strength is paying for travel for Sarah Freeman, R&D's Food Access Coordinator, to attend the NO KID HUNGRY'S RURAL CHILD HUNGER SUMMIT from March 30th—April 1st in Columbus, Ohio. The scholarship covers all expenses including airfare and ground transportation through reimbursement and hotel accommodations will be booked and paid for directly by Share Our Strength. The County of Hawaii Agriculture program is committed to increasing food access and consumption of local food. Currently in Hawaii County 50% of the island is considered a food desert, 19.5% of children are food insecure, 61% of families with children struggle to afford basic necessities, and 80% of public-school students are edible for free or reduced lunch. The Food Access Coordinator is tasked with facilitating the identification and implementation of strategic interventions that focus on improving access and consumption of locally produced food among low-income residents and leading the food system strategic planning. The goal of the 2020 Rural Child Hunger Summit is to cultivate a thriving community of researchers, policymakers, and practitioners who are working together to end child hunger in the rural communities they live in or serve. The Summit will bring together a wide range of stakeholders who are leading change in our collective efforts to reduce child hunger in rural communities. Objectives for the Summit are four-fold: 1. Explore the disparities driving child hunger in rural communities 2. Identify promising practices and policy levers that amplify the impact of existing nutrition assistance programs or reduce the incidence of rural child hunger 3. Celebrate innovations that are user-centered and evidence-informed 4. Foster connections between communities of research and practice This Summit will increase the Food Access Coordinators capacity and network connections to facilitate and implement strategic interventions that create an impact on food access within the County.
