A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT
AND FROM THE DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A
DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT FOR EXPENSES ASSOCIATED WITH THE
PURCHASE AND INSTALLATION OF A HARDENED CANOPY SHELTER TO
PROTECT THE FIRE ENGINE APPARATUS AT THE HAWAIIAN PARADISE PARK
STATION.
WHEREAS, Hawaii Fire Department's Station 18 in Hawaiian Paradise Park serves
over 7,000 HPP residents and provides support to more than 9,000 residents in neighboring
communities in Kea`au and Pahoa; and
WHEREAS, in 2019, Station 18 responded to 1,672 emergency calls and incidents in
HPP and is expected to respond to more than 1,900 before the end of 2020; and
WHEREAS, approximately sixty percent of the population living within the primary
response area for Station 18 are considered low to moderate income households, which often
face greater barriers to accessing medical care and are more at risk for health challenges and
chronic disease; and
WHEREAS, the fire engine at Station 18 is a key apparatus that must remain in good
condition to support firefighters in their work to save and protect lives and property, and to
ensure timely response to fires, natural disasters, and other emergencies; and
WHEREAS, due to critically limited covered space at Station 18, the fire engine is
currently parked outside in order to store an ambulance that was recently assigned to the district
and helps support emergency response in the region; and
WHEREAS, exposure to natural elements has caused water to leak into the fire engine's
air conditioning unit and caused some damage to electronic components; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii County Fire Department is requesting funds to purchase a
hardened canopy shelter for the fire engine apparatus; now,therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that
Contingency Relief funds from Council District 4 will be appropriated to the Hawaii Fire
Department for expenses associated with the purchase and installation of a hardened canopy
shelter to protect the fire engine apparatus at the Hawaiian Paradise Park Station.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawaii hereby
transferred/appropriated the following amount as set forth below:

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall transmit a copy of this
resolution to the Fire Chief and Director of Finance, and that the Director of Finance is hereby
authorized to make the necessary transfers in accordance with the terms of this resolution.
