Aloha Council Members,
I write to you as a mainland resident who wants to rebuild in the Vacationland subdivision (Puna). This
area has a new ocean view, new land and new black sand beaches, proximity to this new waterfront and
the classic Kapoho micro-climate conditions. Pele's work elevated the subdivision so there is no longer
a risk of flooding along with no fire or termite risk.
I am asking that you use your council powers so the local roads, parks and boat ramps are restored.
Restoring route 137 in lower Puna is an intelligent action to make. Restoration of the road from the four
corners intersection to Pohoiki gives an alternative emergency route for Kalapana residents. It also gives
a direct route for fishermen using the Pohoiki boat ramp. Property owners would also use the road to
access and rebuild their homes, businesses and orchid farms.
The County of Hawaii should use a small fraction of its financial gain from the lava flow event to restore
access to those who have lost so much. The County would be creating the conditions for Puna job
growth as Vacationland owners rebuild. The County of Hawaii would benefit from future tax revenue.
Going further and assisting housing associations such as Vacationland with a grant to help with the cost
of internal road reconstruction and opening up the area for vacation rentals would have further positive
benefits for both those who have suffered loss and the County.
