COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII <br />RESOLUTION NO. 557 20 <br />N I J6.1'1101*3 2104 a .114 "•!'• Ell V Eli 1Z <br />WHEREAS, the Pdhoa Lava Zone Museum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a <br />mission to establish a sustainable museum environment that attracts visitors and residents to <br />Pdhoa and provides a place for educational tours that highlight the unique geological features of <br />lower Puna while also serving as a visitor's center; and <br />WHEREAS, the Pdhoa Lava Zone Museum opened its doors in Downtown Pdhoa in <br />December 2018 as a project initiated by the Mainstreet Pdhoa Association to encourage tourism <br />and display exhibits that were formerly housed at the Jaggar Museum at Hawaii Volcanoes <br />National Park, which is now closed due to severe damage caused by the eruption; and <br />WHEREAS, the Pdhoa Lava Zone Museum also features videos and murals of the <br />eruption contributed by local artists, receives visitors from all over the world, hosts tours for <br />small groups, and provides educational events to local civic, school, and youth groups; and <br />WHEREAS, the Pdhoa Lava Zone Museum is requesting funds to cover docent training, <br />science and technical support, and marketing and print materials for the promotion and <br />expansion of its exhibits; and <br />WHEREAS, this project falls within the Department of Research and Development's <br />mission to increase the economic contribution of the visitor industry, promote quality experiences <br />for visitors, and promote a high quality of life for Hawaii Island residents; and <br />WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawaii County Code, <br />Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via <br />resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, <br />activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, <br />therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br />Contingency Relief funds from Council District 5 will be appropriated to the Department of <br />Research and Development to provide a grant to the Pdhoa Lava Zone Museum for the <br />promotion and expansion of its exhibits. <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawaii hereby <br />transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below: <br />
