Subject: Communication 823: Nominates Daniel Paleka to the Fire Commission
Hearing Date: Wednesday, March 25,2020
Time/Place of Hearing: 9:00 a.m., Hawaii County Building Council Chambers
I am Darren J. Rosario, Fire Chief of the Hawaii Fire Department. I support the nomination of
Daniel Paleka to the Fire Commission. I have worked directly with Mr. Paleka during his tenure
as a Hawai'i County Council Member. During his tenure he assisted the department and our
community with the needs to prepare for and plan for the possible inundation of the lower Puna
area during the 2014 eruption phase. He will represent his district in the matters involving the
Fire Commission with the highest regards.
2020 will be a pivotal year for the Fire Commission. In December 2019 I provided notice to the
Fire Commission of my intent to retire in 2020. Although the current events facing not just our
county but the world have suspended any imminent retirement for me, I look forward to
retirement by years end at the latest. The nomination of Mr. Paleka and the others today will
result in the commission having a quorum to conduct its business.
