Subject: Communication 824: Nominates Merrick Nishimoto to the Fire Commission

Time/Place of Hearing: 9:00 a.m.,Hawaii County Building Council Chambers
I am Darren J. Rosario, Fire Chief of the Hawai`i Fire Department. I support the nomination of
Merrick Nishimoto to the Fire Commission. I have known Merrick on a professional level for
approximately 10 years. During his tenure as the Deputy Public Works Director, our department
has been able to work side by side with Mr. Nishimoto. He will represent his district in the
matters involving the Fire Commission with the highest regards.
2020 will be a pivotal year for the Fire Commission. In December 2019 I provided notice to the
Fire Commission of my intent to retire in 2020. Although the current events facing not justour
county but the world have suspended any imminent retirement for me, I look forward to
retirement by years end at the latest. The nomination of Mr. Nishimoto and the others today will
result in the commission in having a quorum to conduct its business.
