RESOLUTION 521-20
Dear Chairman Chung and Councilmembers,
Thank you for the opportunity to comment in favor the above Resolution. It is a
tribute to the people of North Kohala, that they have been working for decades to
protect the land of the Kula Iwi O Kamehameha- the homelands of King Kamehameha
the Great. Not only are these lands important historically and culturally, but they have
been named as Priority One for public access in the North Kohala Community
Development Plan (County Ord. 151-08).
I am attaching a map of the four-and-a-half-mine northern coastline that
besides being one of the earliest settlements of Hawaiians, was controlled during his
lifetime by Kohala-born King Kamehameha I. It is a map I showed you in testimony
video conferencing at the Finance Committee meeting. Kapanaia makes up the two
yellow parcels and includes Kapanaia Bay, Walaohia Gulch, Kapalama Heiau and
numerous registered historic sites and 178 archaeological features. The land has
ranked high on the PONC priority list since 2010.
Thank you for your favorable vote.
