To: Council Testimony
Aloha,
I like many others have flooded your offices,telephone and many of us have voiced our concerns to you
and each other. The mayor of Hawaii county needs to understand his actions and that he's placing all of
us to certain death by not following guidelines or making his own to protect those of us that live here.
While I may not have been born here,this has been my home for 5yrs.This is home.The home my
children have grown up in.The community, life, people I want my children raised in.This is our safe
place.
We need further actions to protect the land and people. I work for a charter company so working with
tourist I know first-hand like many others because we are tour based.Just the other day I had a family
on my boat who had just come from Seattle.A massive hot spot for this and he told me they were
scared and wanted to get away.When the airlines dropped prices to$99 each way they flew over. I
asked had they been exposed or knew of close contact they couldn't look me in the eyes.They wanted
to get away and feel safe. Why are we a safe haven for tourists but not for us.Those of us that live here
should not fear going to work,fear catching anything from someone that knowingly came here who had
contact with people who may have spread it.These people didn't care if they brought it here,they only
wanted to save themselves. We want to save ourselves too.
This isn't an easy email to send because I sent my mother to Oregon to be with my nephew who has
cancer. After getting there she found out someone in the Ronald McDonald house has been there and
they were being tested and she was advised to self-isolate. She wanted to fly home and the hospital told
her she could. I told her she could not and would not be able to come home if she has been exposed. I
will not put people's lives in jeopardy.As of right now she's stuck, In Oregon and can't get home. Even is
she doesn't have anything I would rather be safe than sorry.
We need protection and we need it now.The people of Hawaii need to be heard. We are the choice.The
choice that matters. Not money, not tourists, but those that live here. Protect us.
This community,this state is amazingly strong at coming together and being a tribe. This land is our
home,these are our people and family. We are here to band together and protect our people. It's time
the government and our leaders step up and band together with us.
