Aloha Council Members,
My name is Vyas Hale. I am a resident of Holualoa and a 12th grade high school student at
Kealakehe High School. I am alarmed at the way Mayor Kim has decided to handle the COVID-
19 outbreak and strongly disagree with his seemingly nonchalant response. His decisions to
allow county parks to remain open, to leave nonessential businesses open, and encourage ,
teens to "congregate" instead of taking the precaution of isolation will only quicken and worsen
the spread of the virus. I encourage the Council and the Mayor to heed the advice of the Lt.
Gov. and the CDC to prevent a widespread outbreak in our community and to "flatten the
curve." The economic effects of this virus are short term when we look at the devastating
impacts it can have on members of our community, especially our kupuna. Testing needs to be
expanded to test as many people as possible to determine and mitigate possible clusters, as
South Korea has demonstrated. Aggressive actions against coronavirus now will save lives.
