HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0843.170 2018-2020 COUNTY CLERK COUNTY OF HAWAI'I RECEIVED Fri 3/20/2020 12:32 PM Time 12:02 pt' By M MAYOR KIM Date MAR 2 0. 2020 To: Council Testimony ) March 20, 2020 Dear Council members, I spent all day yesterday trying to contact Lt.Gov Josh Green, Governor Ige and others, regarding Mayor Kim's throw caution to the wind mentality. Throughout the nation and on all of the Hawaiian islands except ours, we are all trying to flatten the curve by engaging in social distancing. Mayor Kim is creating an environment that is just the opposite! By ordering all county facilities and programs to remain open, he is enticing .group congregation and social interaction! All Parks and Recreation facilities are open. Groups, families, basically everyone including seniors a vulnerable population can all go to the gyms, beaches, ballfields, pavilions, and playgrounds to congregate to and engage in physical activities, classes, and other group instruction. Recreation Directors were ask to function as Day Cares. Please verify this with the P&R Director. County facilities are all open- drivers licensing, vehicle registration, public works, election offices, are all open. Which sets the stage for one on one personal contact. Exactly what we are trying to avoid at the national and state levels. I do not understand what our Mayor, our former Civil Defense Director is thinking and needless to say, I'm very upset with his handling of the COVID 19 pandemic. Please heed what our governor is asking all counties to do. Plesse heed what our Dept. Of Health leaders are saying is risky with Mayor Kim's plan. One last thought. The Mayor's opposition is now making state news. Do you think the other islands will welcome Big Island travellers to their islands if we remain under Kim's rule? I have FOUR critical doctor appointments on Oahu in mid April. I am hoping that by self isolating(I prepared for this since February) and barring any physician cancellations, that I will be able to still see them. I would not want our Mayor's plan to throw caution to the wind, to be a major problem for me next month. Please council members. Please use comments sense. Harry's plan defies all logic. Mahalo for your time. Comm. No, %%0) .111) Ref.To: N/A Ref. Date MAR 2 0 2020 Sincerely, Merle Gornick Retired Recreation Director Mt. View Gym ,
