I am writing today to express my sadness and grave concern for our island ohana, but most especially for our kupuna, I am deeply concerned that our mayor, Harry Kim, is not acting decisively and quickly enough to prevent coronavirus from spreading in our.community,#FLATTENTHECURVE! I have been a very strong supporter of Mayor Kim in the past, but, today I cannot support the decision he has made to virtually do nothing to keep us safe. His "directives"to local businesses have not been heeded, They have not complied, plain and simple. Today, there were both foreign and domestic travelers mingling about in stores and restaurants with local residents. I wonder how many could be carriers of this virus. They can't know and neither can we, which is why we must lock down our island by requiring all incoming passengers, whether residents or visitors, to quarantine for 14 days....in line with Lt Governor Green's plan of action. I am a resident of Mohouli Senior Residences and we have done more than you have by closing our community center, prohibiting congregating in common areas, and social distancing. I ask you, Mayor Kim, to reconsider your decision of"business as usual." There is nothing usual about our current situation. My fear is that by the time you do something, the situation will be out of control. You are not an epidemiologist nor a scientist. While consulting with department heads is to be expected in times of emergencies, you are not the experts. Any decisions made by you and your group of department heads must be in line with medical and scientific protocols to ensure the health and well-being of everyone in our community, but most especially front line medical personnel, first responders, government leaders, kupuna, and those with underlying health conditions. I implore you, Mayor Kim, to make the decisions necessary to essentially shut Hawaii Island down. If we don't do this now,we most certainly will pay the price for it later. Please do not think we are able to fight this where no one else has. It is just a matter of time! Sincerely and with aloha, Kupuna Marlene M Kufrovich Comm. No. Cyd .110 Ref.
