Aloha,
I believe most of the residents are taking the precautionary measures seriously. What I am seeing
is that a lot our visitors do not! Because we are a hospitality state there is very little we can do
when faced with this situation. I work in retail in a resort area and it was truly getting scary. We
were taking every measure we could to protect ourselves as guided by the CDC. But our
customers (out of state visitors)were not which put us at risk. I am one of the fortunate ones
who's company chose our health, well-being and social responsibility over money and closed its
doors until further notice.
But we have thousands of residents who do not have the luxury that I do to work for a company
like mine. My boyfriend works in the maintenance department on a resort and has to answer calls
to guests rooms that are occupied. The guests do not social distance! Imagine how he feels going
in to do a repair with used Kleenex and cough meds on the counter and a guest that stands close
to him watching him work? (this has happened) If they are willing to get on a plane when all
medical professionals are saying not to they are not taking this seriously.
We have a true Social Responsibility to stop the spread and protect the most vulnerable in our
community.
I truly believe we should have a minimum 14 day shelter in place (with only essential operations
open)to find who has been exposed and let them receive medical care, and a two week
mandatory quarantine for ALL travelers with measures put in place to protect the employees in
our hotels, vacation rentals etc.
After our two week shelter in place we should maintain a two week quarantine for ALL travel
until the pandemic is over
I know that the financial reproductions are HUGE but this is not only being felt here it is all over
the world. Our industry will be the last to recover regardless of the action we take today due to
the world's economic fallout. Why not protect us now, so we are ALL here to rebuild in the
financial recovery of our Island in the future.
Please keep us updated on what is being done to protect our island from a virus that is being
introduced to our population from the outside. Because of our Mayors lack of action with many
residents unhappy about the choices being made we look to our remaining leaders to protect our
community.
