Aloha-
As a Nurse Practitioner, I strongly urge you to begin immediate mandatory 14 day quarantine for
anyone arriving on our island. I DO NOT mean self isolation. We may not be able to shut down
flights, but we can prevent the outsiders from bringing the virus to us. The quarantine should be
incentive enough to keep people from flying here.
If you tell new people arriving to self isolate they will not. I was in Safeway listening to a group
of tourists, who's kids were running and touching everything, complain that the locals ruins their
vacation by shutting everything down. They were upset there was no food in the grocery stores,
no restaurants open,no things to do, etc. I looked at them and in the nicest manner possible,
asked when they arrived.... yesterday. I asked them why they thought it was a good idea to travel
here and their reply was because I got a good deal on flights and I've always wanted to come to
Hawaii and I wanted to get away from all that's going on about the virus. When I asked why
they would want to risk the health of themselves and their children I was promptly told, there
was no risk and everyone was being silly. I kindly asked them to back out of my personal space
and to get their children under control as we were trying to protect ourselves and our
kapuna. The retort was "I'll do whatever I want, I paid for this trip and you can't stop me!" I
shook my head and said it's people like you who spread the virus, please spread it in your own
town and leave. Again, their reply was "it's my right to be here."
Please back up John Green's plea to quarantine.
Mahalo,
Susan Yandall
