I 111 1 Mon 5/11/2020 7:04 AM Bill 169 Testimony-Vote No sE To: Council Testimony Aloha, I I strongly believe Bill 169 will do much more harm than good to our economy. This proposed bill would' create a new property tax classification for luxury homes. These homes are mostly prevalent in West Hawaii, which has an abundance of subdivisions that cater' these homeowners. If the property taxes are significantly raised on these homes, it will most likely result less of these homes being built or sold. This will have a negative affect on the construction industry, and the various m 4 businesses that cater to these residents. I'm already seeing signs of weakness in the construction industry in West Hawaii. Honsador Lumber has cut the hours of their employees-at least at their Kailua-Kona location. I understand the county's financial situation is pretty precarious. The state will likely siphon the county's share of the Transient Accommodations tax to balance their books. The county's ability to increase revenue is pretty limited, but it shouldn't be on the backs of the wealthiest people owning homes here. I strongly urge that other options to balance the budget should be considered, such as making additional cuts to the budget, or employee furloughs. Sincerely, Aaron Stene Comm. No. Ref.To: Ref. Date
