Subject: Response to Questions from Ms. Gretchen Lawson
Today I received a copy of the letter from Ms. Gretchen Lawson to the Hawaii County
Council. I responded to each of her questions (1-3, and a-c).

1. Compliance of Federal regulations involving access to airport terminals
The County has no terminals at either Hilo or Kona airports. There are no
Federal regulations requiring service to airports.
2. Utilize buses in South Kohala for additional bus service.
Currently some buses do provide service in the Waimea and Waikoloa areas. The
transit agency also provides afterschool service from Konawaena and Kealakehe
for students involved in sports and other activities. Workers and shoppers also
utilize these buses.
3. Special service for cruise ship passengers.
The County does not provide special cruise ships service in Kona. Cruise ship
passengers do use the busses at times, but are doing so based on the regular infra
Kona bus schedule.
a. Please see response to question number 1.
b. Feasibility of changing from commuter to fixed route system
The transit agency is currently addressing that question. I am involved in
discussion with State D.O.T. officials to determine the possibility of additional
funding for this change. We will also make a presentation with administration
and finance officials for their input on this matter. Once all facts have been
obtained, meetings will be held for public input.
c. Provide better service
Basically this would involve additional funding. With County funding limited,
and no State funding available, the Federal government is the likely source and
we will continue pursuing those moneys.
