Aloha County Council Members,
On page A6 of the Sunday, May 31 Tribune Herald readers saw a cartoon and a LTE which posed similar and
very critical questions about the role of government and our future economy based on tourism.
You probably saw both the cartoon and LTE. The cartoon posed the question as to why you would give
$250,000 to private golf courses on West Hawaii Island. It's a good question. Can any of you please give me
one good reason why this was done? I can't wrap my brain around this action.
Second was a letter from a Mr. Hightower from Hilo who posed the age-old question of economic diversity in
Hawai'i, or the lack thereof, and advocated for, finally, an honest attempt to diversify our economy and make
the tourism industry far more sustainable, manageable and environmentally responsible.
Changing economic course is never easy and especially in a pandemic which has impacted hundreds of millions
of people around the country and globe. But now is the time for fresh, honest and bold leadership to start this
difficult and complicated dialog and process. Business as usual doesn't work any longer. We need to face that
fact. We need to embrace change,not do the same things which for decades have not served the majority of
Hawaiians.
