Pursuant to your Department's "Procedures for Establishing Street Names", we would like to request a name for the private roadways in the subdivision . We request authorization to use the name " `Alohi Kai Drive" for the streets. According to Pukui and Elbert's Hawaiian Dictionarv_ ` `Alohi' means `spazkling' or `brilliant', and, of course, `kai' means `sea' or `seawazd'. Together, they mean `spazkling sea', and there is no better description for the ocean when the sun is low in the West. We have verified with with Ms. Alice Kawaha that these names are not in use elsewhere on the island; there aze no other parcels fronted by the streets, and therefore no other property owners would be affected by this name selection. Looking at the map of the subdivision, it can be seen that the two streets in the subdivision are in the shape of the letter "T". The stem of the T proceeds makai from Alii Drive, and the cross baz parallels the ocean. We understand that it is acceptable, in cases where there are not many lots on a pair of streets like this, to identify both streets with the same name, and we would prefer to do this. However, if that is unacceptable, we would accept having the vertical street leaving Alii Drive, identified on the subdivision map as Road A, named `Alohi Kai Drive, and the other road, identified as Road B, named `Alohi Kai Place.
