North Kohala Community Access Group <br />March 6, 2019 (Old State Judiciary Building 4:30pm) <br />Participants: Ted Matsuda, Joe Carvalho, Carter Collins, Toni Withington, Rick Gmirkin, Jack Hoyt, <br />Teri Takata, Beth Robinson, Greg Moores, Eli Fein. <br />❖ Pololu Lookout <br />o SB 1262 - DLNR has requested $500,000 budget from the state legislature for a <br />feasibility study on trial stability and parking lot area. <br />• Bill has passed and is in the Ways & Means committee. <br />o DOCARE has been informed of possible citation to tour operators. <br />• There were 3 companies with a total of 8 vans full of tourist that were hiking <br />down the Pololu Valley Trail. <br />• The State Na Ala Hele Trails did not issue any permits for that day. <br />•'• Akoakoa Point <br />o NSTR. <br />❖ Hapu'u — Kapanaia <br />o The county needs the State Legacy Land funds in hand before they can start <br />negotiations for public purchase. <br />• Hopefully the monies can get to the county by the end of this year. <br />o Hon's & Misty Kai's properties are on the market for sale. <br />• The Hon's sent a letter of intent to PONC for public purchase. <br />o Hapu'u area of coast lands recently purchased. <br />• The maintenance funds application will be applied by a local non-profit. <br />The neighboring landowner is willing to do mowing until the maintenance funds <br />are available. <br />•'• Halelua <br />♦ o NSTR. <br />•'• Pahoa Beach <br />♦ o There is a rumor that a stonewall is being built blocking the public access trail. <br />• Our group will schedule a walk to check the trail access. <br />❖ Upolu Airport East <br />o NSTR. <br />❖ Upolu Airport Restoration <br />o High school students are working with a non-profit group to install check dams and <br />organic rolls to mitigate erosion. They are also planting native plants to control erosion. <br />•'• Honoipu <br />♦ o The new owners of the South 2-1/2 buildings have been remodeled & all asbestos have <br />been removed. <br />• The public access plan was extended without a deadline by the county. <br />• We will talk with the landowners before going to the county. <br />•'• Pali Akamoa <br />♦ o There is a possibility of a federal grant to applying to trails. <br />• We will look into it. <br />Page 1 1 <br />
