TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT RURAL (HISTORIC) VILLAGE Residential, business and leisure space within walking distance of Public Transport (provide for the future) Central transit stop surrounded by a high density mixed - use area (1/4 - 1/2 mile) that s us! Designed to be more walkable - reducing land dedicated to automobiles (same as in the 19th century!) HOW TO BECOME MORE WALKABLE (AGAIN) Dedicated Pedestrian Shoulders (sidewalks are not appropriate (or affordable) in our village) Parking lots to get vehicles out of the shoulders (and off the Mamalahoa) Restrooms nearest public restroom is 2.9 mi distant (Pualani Estates playground) Traffic Calming measures - Education, Engineering, Enforcement for safety Places to gather Imin Center? pocket park? benches? the School! Inviting place for appropriate businesses to thrive (and school, churches, families) H LUALOA IS HISTORIC PRE 1895 This makes H lualoa a special place to visit and live in. It is diverse. It is threatened. Currently no protections. Historic Registry is good but it is just a piece of paper. How can we help owners appreciate and want to preserve historic buildings, structures and objects? How can we help the County appreciate and want to preserve the historic landscape? WE (THE GRASS ROOTS COMMUNITY) CAN DESIGN A PLAN WITH A LITTLE HELP! We, the community of H There are technical considerations, regulatory constraints, political processes it s a jungle out there. We ask the Kona CDP Action Committee to advise us as we navigate these challenges and opportunities OUR ROADMAP MILESTONES: 1. Village consensus on what matters (what to save and what to enhance) 2. A plan document to coordinate and prioritize projects (and reduce entropy) over time 3. Leverage existing mechanisms to influence and guide change (e.g. form Special District, Zoning Overlay, Corridor Mgt Plan, designations (e.g. County Scenic Corridor, Historic District) what combination will serve best? May we seek your consultation when we get challenged during problem solving? May we present for your review and receive your advice as we start and again as we near completion of each milestone?
