Congratulations to our new Community Service Program Assistant of Waimea/Waikoloa Reyn Maeno.
Reyn was recently promoted from a CSW III in our Hilo office to CSPA on May 1, 2019.
His office is located at the Lily Yoshimatsu Senior Center in Waimea. Good Luck and Best Wishes
on your newest promotion!
On March 18, 2019, CSE welcomed Salena Espejo as the new Community Service Worker III
into the Hilo operation. A mother of 3, she enjoys spending time at the beach and with family.
With a CNA background, clerical and caregiving skills, Selena’s passion has come full circle.
“I love working with the Elderly” she replies! Congratulations and welcome aboard.
CSE Kona would like to welcome our newest Community Service Worker III, Randall Doi.
He joins us with many years of experience working with people. He has worked for the
State’s Judiciary and DHS systems. He enjoys playing sports and working with the Kupuna.

County of Hawai‘i Offers Home Repair Loans
The Office of Housing and Community Development is currently accepting applications to its’
Residential Repair Program (RRP).
The RRP is a low interest loan program available to eligible low-and moderate-income
homeowners who are interested in repairing and improving their primary residence.
The RRP loan can be used for, but not limited to, roof repairs, electrical and plumbing
work, sewer improvements, termite treatment, repairs to damages caused by termites
or wood rot and the installation of a solar water heating system. In addition, it could be
used for home modifications to meet the needs of a person with disabilities.
Loans range from $2,500 to $25,000 at
3% simple interest. Loan payments are deferred for 15 years, at which time full
payment will be due. Applicants 62 years or older or with persons with a disability,
may be eligible to have 30% of the principal balance of the loan forgiven at end of
the loan period.

Senior Companion Recognition Luncheon
This year’s Senior Companion Recognition was held at the Imiloa Sky Garden restaurant on May 10, 2019.
An in-service training was conducted by T/A Senior Companion Director, Fran Takamiyashiro before the
official festivities began with some games, gifts, program certificates and a scrumptious lunch buffet.
“Senior Companions” were honored for their dedication, commitment and countless hours in providing In-home
Support Services to the frail elderly in need of assistance on a one to one basis to maintain an independent living
at home. Mahalo for all that you do.

CSE Emergency Evacuation Update List
CSE is part of the Hawai‘i County Civil Defense response team. As we move into the official hurricane season
from June to the end of November, we are updating our evacuation assistance list to be ready to respond and
swing into action. If you are in need of transportation assistance in the event of a natural disaster or a
Civil Defense emergency, please call our CSE staff at (808) 961-8777 in East Hawai‘i or at (808) 323-4320
in West Hawai‘i to get more information. You may also call the nearest district office for your convenience.

Casino Day 2019
270 Seniors from around the Island enjoyed a fun filled day of Black Jack, Roulette, Poker, Craps, Wheel of For-tune,
& BINGO! It was just like being in VEGAS!!! 5 lucky seniors walked away with prizes for being “BIG WINNERS” at the
event. But at the end of the day every senior that attended went home winners!!!

Annual Hawai‘i Senior Karaoke Revue
Talented singers from Kamana Senior Center, Kailua-Kona & Maui entertained over 250 spectators in the
Annual Karaoke Revue held at Aunty Sally’s Lu‘au Hale. The beautifully decorated stage by Norman Nakano
and his crew was the perfect background for the singers. During intermission there was a special performance
by Kamana’s Taiko Class.

SENIORS IN TRAINING
The Senior Training & Employment Program
(STEP) assists eligible, unemployed, low-income job seekers age 55 and over in
getting temporary but current work experience.
PARTICIPANT ELIGIBILITY
-Must be 55 years or older and unemployed at the time applying for enrollment.
-Must meet low-income federal guidelines.
-Must be a resident of the County of Hawai‘i.

Jay. Marybeth is doing her STEP Training at The Boys & Girls Club, Hilo as a Kitchen Helper.
She is learning about the many responsibilities of working in a kitchen and helping
The Boys & Girls Club supplement the food nutrition for our keikis by serving them healthy
snacks and healthy meals.
On April 4, 2019 Host Agency Supervisors and STEP Enrollee’s participated in a First Aid/CPR/AED
Training instructed by Safety Specialist, Doug McCormick. This basic level first aid training program
is designed to give individuals knowledge and skills necessary to prevent, recognize and provide basic
care for injuries and sudden illnesses until advanced medical personnel arrive and take over.
