Box 1494 Pahoa, HI 96778 Dear lya: Thank you for your letter that arrived on June 6, 2019, regarding your concerns about the loss of coral in Hawaii. Please be aware that there is an initiative to restore the quality of water in Bayfront, which would lead to the restoration of coral in Hilo Bay. I have the pleasure to tell you that the State Harbors Division is helping the County together with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to explore the partial opening of the Hilo Breakwater. This has been a long-standing dream for me, and your letter indicates that you share the same wish to return our Bayfront waters to their pristine state, to allow our families to safely swim and fish. We have been very grateful to State Harbors Division, who have agreed that this plan is feasible. We are very excited at the prospect of engaging in the work of restoring the coral and the fish by undertaking the partial opening of the Breakwater. I wish I could give you a timeline, but I can assure you that we are carrying on the necessary studies as we speak. Thank you very much for taking the time to write to me.
