Incident: Hurricane Erick Preparation
This is a Civil Defense message for Wednesday, July 31 at 1:30pm.
The Central Pacific Hurricane Center reports that Hurricane Erick is currently located 535 miles
south east from Hilo and is moving west at 14 miles per hour with sustained winds of 115
miles per hour. Erick is slowly weakening as it moves south of Hawaii Island.
Central Pacific Hurricane Center forecasts High surf may begin impacting the east facing shores
of Hawaii Island tonight. Heavy rains and a Flash Flood Watch are forecast for Thursday.
The following public safety measures and recommendations are now in effect:
Whittington and Punaluu Beach parks will be closed at noon today. All camping permits
and pavilion rentals for this weekend are cancelled.
South Point Road will be closed at 3:00 pm today. Only residents of South Point Road will
have access until further notice.
The Bayfront Parking lot will be closed Thursday morning, August 1, unit further notice.
The Hele-On buses will pick-up passengers behind the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
Please park between the Butler Buildings and Wong Stadium.
