Dear Joyce and Greg,
Thank you for your letter of July 10, 2019 in which you ask that the opening
hours for Pohoiki Beach Park be extended to 7:00 p.m.
According to our Parks and Recreation staff, the issue would be about having the
park be open with the Ocean Safety Officers are not on duty. The lifeguards are on
duty 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. when the park is open. Pohoiki Beach Park has probably
the most dangerous beach break on the Island, and the lifeguards definitely earn their
pay at this beach during opening hours. I do not believe it would be reasonable to ask
them to work an extra hour every day.
I'm sure you understand that due to the hazardous conditions, we could not keep
the park open without lifeguards on duty.
