Kossow Deputy Managing Director County of Hawai‘i Office of the Mayor 25 Aupuni Street, Suite 2603  Hilo, Hawai‘i 96720  (808) 961-8211  Fax (808) 961-6553 KONA: 74-5044 Ane Keohokālole Hwy., Bldg C  Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i 96740 (808) 323-4444  Fax (808) 323-4440 September 18, 2019 NEWS RELEASE: Siren Testing On Hawai‘i Island on Friday, September 20, 2019 The State of Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, together with the Hawai'i County Civil Defense Agency, will conduct siren testing on Friday, September 20, between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at the following locations:  MacKenzie State Recreation Area - Pāhoa  Hilo Hillsides Estates – Hilo Residents nearby may hear the siren sound for intervals of 30 seconds to 3 minutes intervals during the designated timeframe. Testing will include short blasts known as “burps.” During the tests, Emergency Management officials and technicians will be checking the functionality of the sirens. These sirens were installed as part of the State of Hawai‘i’s ongoing All-Hazard Outdoor Warning Siren Program. Other sirens will be updated, and new sirens installed, at various locations across the island under this program. The All-Hazard Outdoor Siren Warning System for Public Safety is one part of Hawai‘i’s Statewide Alert and Warning System used to notify the public during emergencies. We encourage you to use other supplemental methods of warning, including signing up with the Hawai'i County Civil Defense mass emergency notification system provided by Everbridge, or using NOAA Weather Radio. Residents with concerns about the sirens or their operations, or with reports of siren malfunctions, may contact the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency at (808) 935-0031.
