HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-09-19 Committee on the Status of Women MinutesMEETING MINUTES Wednesday September 19, 2018 9:30am to 11.00am Office of the Prosecuting Attorney Conference Room B 655 Kilauea Avenue, Hilo, HI 96720 (Videoconference) Office of the Prosecuting Attorney Videoconference Room 81-980 Halekii Street, Suite #150 Kealakekua, HI 96750 CALL TO ORDER - Chair Brooke Derby, called the meeting to order at 9:43 a.m. ROLL CALL Present — Brooke Derby, Chair; Lee -Ann Heely, Vice Chair, Mele Spencer; J Katherine "Kami" Bolster, Andrew Langtry, Mihaela Ryer, Diana, Office of the Corporation Counsel. Excused: Debra Toledo-Ebreo excused; Jewel Castro, Treasurer excused; Farrah Marie Gomes excused; Recording Secretary; Cyd Hoffeld, HSCSW Commissioner (ex -officio) excused. III. APPROVAL OF AGENDA — Mele motioned, and Mihaela seconded to accept the agenda. Motion passed. IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES — Mihaela motioned and Kami seconded to approve the Minutes of August 15, 2018. Motion passed. V. TREASURER'S REPORT A. June + July financials — Mele has budget that was approved at August 2018 meeting. Treasurer is unable to provide a report until all information is received. Financials from last fiscal year. Defer action until next month. B. Request for fund - Mele turned in $500 for travel from the National CSW Conference. Per Lisa's email - Committee needs to show expenditure approval in minutes, submitted to Lisa. All requests must be approved or denied by County Finance. C. Lee -Ann motioned to approve $500 toward Mele's travel to National CSW conference. Kami seconded. Andrew offered discussion to clarify if funds were already in budget. CSW Committee confirmed $500 was previously budgeted. Motion carried. Action Item: Jewel to follow up with accountant. Brooke to follow up with Jewel. Brooke to follow up with Lisa regarding prior $500 funding request. VI. STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC - None VII. CORRESPONDENCE -None VIII. REPORTS A. HSCSW Report - Cyd reports HSC has not met since May 2018. October 24th is next scheduled meeting. HIWLF request received but no funding is available due to no discretionary funds available at State level. IX. OLD BUSINESS A. Teen Dating Violence • Update on cell phone safety card distribution - New members need copies of the cell phone safety cards. Action Item: Brooke to distribute Cell Phone Safety Farrah cards and will distribute cards to Brooke for distribution on the westside. B. Real Women Essay Contest • Table for next months meeting. Action Item: Farrah to submit report, article and pictures. Mele to distribute to HTH and Janet Snyder, Mayor's PR Specialist. C. Hawaii Island Women's Leadership Forum • The Hawaii Island Women's Leadership Forum (HIWLF) Summit is exactly one month away! Forum will be held on October 19, 2018 at the Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa at Keauhou Bay. • HIWLF has requested funding from County Council- Three resolutions are on the Council agenda for 9/19- 1. David - $1,000 2. LeeLoy - $500 3. Chung - $300 The remaining three are expected to be on the Council agenda for 10/3 or 10/17- 1. Poindexter - $1,000 2. Eoff - $1,000 3. Richards - amount TBA • Speakers identified, tickets are for sale, registration is now open • Hawaii Island Women's Leadership Forum facebook page as all the information. • As of 9/18/18 40 tickets were sold. 25% booked on vendor booths. Sponsorships are still coming in to support the HIWLF. CSW will set up a general info booth with literature (Urgent Services Directory qty -350 Cell Phone Safety Cards qty -350) make available for attendees. CSW Banner will be displayed at the HIWLF check in table. Mele will gather the documents and bring to the Summit to display and distribute. Action Item: Mele will pick up Cell Phone Safety Cards, Urgent Services Directory, Tri -fold information board and Banner from Lisa. D. CSW Brochure — Farrah's student team is working on brochure draft. Action Item: Brooke to follow up with Farrah regarding brochure copy for revision and edit of new members. Brooke will send out most recent draft, aim to get approval at next month's CSW meeting. Mihaela offered to lead the brochure edits and bring to next meeting. E. Urgent Services Directory • Update on distribution —Mihaela 40 to YWCA; 20 Wainaku Property Association. 25 Kailua Kona Library. • Brooke asked for update on statistics from CSW minutes. Action Item: Brooke to follow up with Alan on the Urgent Services Directory tracking data. F. Human Trafficking • Star Bulletin ran an article. Prosecutor's office has a contact available to speak to CSW. • Kara of HSCSW completed a study with University of Arizona on human trafficking. Brooke is working out details with Kara to best fit CSW's schedule to discuss collaborating with Hawaii State Committee on the Status of Women. • Mihaela suggested to launch an awareness campaign on the radio or in the newspaper. To be discussed at next month's meeting. Action Item: Mele to send HSCSW email to Brooke, then Brooke will send to Lisa with a request to send the email to CSW members. G. Equal Pay • No update on status. Action Item: Brooke will follow up with Jewel. X. NEW BUSINESS A. Brooke read the Sub Committee members. B. CSW Andrew motioned to approve the SubCommittee; Mele seconded. Motion carried. SubCommittee Roster. Brooke updated SubCommittee roster. Mele moved to add Mihaela to Human Trafficking; Kami seconded. Motion approved. Action Item: Mele will update, send to Brooke, Brooke will send to Lisa. Lee -Ann will send email SubCommittee to start conversation on Human Trafficking. XI. ANNOUNCEMENTS (relating to CSW) — Mihaela announced the YWCA "Walk a Mile in her Shoes" on October 22,2018. Pledge forms are on YWCA Website. Next CSW meeting is on October 17, 2018 at NHERC. November meeting in Kona. December meeting will be decided and will include a gift exchange. Action Item: Brooke will ask Alan if he is interested in participating on October 22, 2018 or if he can recommend anyone to participate. XII. ADJOURNMENT — Mihaela motioned and Mele seconded to adjourn the meeting. Motion passed, and the meeting was adjourned at 10:39 a.m.
