MEETING MINUTES
Tuesday, December 13, 2016, 10:30am

CALL TO ORDER
Chair Farrah -Marie Gomes called meeting to order at 10:29am. Quorum has
been met.

III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES (November 16, 2016)
A. Brooke motioned to approve the November 16, 2016 minutes. Mele
seconded. No discussion. The minutes of November 16, 2016 were
approved as submitted.
IV. TREASURERS REPORT
A. November 2016 Financials
• Only two expenditures for mileage and meals.
• Expenses for real women essay are reflected.
B. Lee -Ann motioned to approve September 2016 financials and Tammy
seconded. September 2016 financials approved as submitted.
C. October 2016 Financials
• Mele presented financials to the CSW.
• Jewel motioned to approve October 2016 financials, Deb
seconded. October 2016 financials approved as submitted.
Hawai'i County is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer
Action: Include November 2016 and December 2016 financials for next
meeting. Also include breakdown of funding from county council for
HIWLF support.
V. STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC
A. None.
VI. CORRESPONDENCE
A. 2 sets of essay submittals for Real Woman Essay have been received and
will be turned over to essay committee for review.
VII. REPORTS
A. State CSW Liaison
• Request authorized for $2000 to help with offsetting cost of
conference.
• Funding will go to Friends of the Future as fiscal agent.
Confirmation from Susan is to cover any agreements. Susan will
invoice Cathy then Cathy will cut the check.
• Cathy was appreciative of invite but due to conflicting schedules,
she was unable to attend our 12/13/16 meeting.
• Legislative update discussion: CSW had thoughts to convene in
January 2017. Cathy has 2nd and 13th as options to choose a day
within window of first two weeks of January 2017.
• CSW to finalize date and timeframe for legislative workshop.
• YWCA is definitely going to offer support. Mele forwarded to
League of Women Voters; waiting to hear back.
• If looking at first week of January 2017 (2nd to 5th is an option for
Farrah to secure UHH classroom).
• Advertisement for legislative workshop will be made to general
public.
VIII. PROJECTS
A. Teen Dating Violence
• Deb spoke to teen group tasked with creating the video.
Equipment is in place to capture and create film. Deb and Jewel
will create deadline. Launch party to be discussed. Project has
been initiated - securing actors, writing script, etc.
• Film will be made available on YouTube.
Action: Deb and Jewel to create action plan with detail.
B. Real Women Essay Contest
• Lee -Ann working to get press release run in WHT and HTH. A
recommendation was made to run press release on airwaves.
• Tammy followed up with teachers at Kona District Schools.
• Luncheon date set for April 9, 2017.

Action: Lee -Ann will contact airwaves to run PSA's. Lee -Ann will also submit
online to WHT and HTH the press release to run ASAP.
C. Hawaii Island Women's Leadership Forum
• Conversations in play about what CSW committee wants to do.
• Communication on next steps will be sent out soon. Also included
will be roles and responsibilities and commitments will be sought
from those who want to serve and participate.
D. CSW Brochure
CSW is calling for pictures from CSW. Send to Farrah over the next
two weeks so a draft brochure can be brought to the next meeting.
Action: CSW members to send pictures to Farrah in next two weeks.
E. Cell Phone Safety Cards
• Cyd has been handing out to schools (Hilo, Waiakea, Kau HS) and
outreach activities for Bay Clinic, Pride Parade, Youth Challenge
Career Fair, health classes and teen dating violence participants
are given cards.
Deb gave out 300 at health fair and ladies night out events.
F. Urgent Services Directory
• Lee -Ann gave 75 to West Hawaii Civic Center information desk.
• Urgent Services Directory can be printed out from website.
• HIWLF page has posted Urgent Services Directory on Facebook.
G. Human Trafficking
• Farrah and Brooke continuing conversation on human trafficking.
Brooke spoke with Hoola Na Pua (Jessica) and Polaris Project —
Hawaii is currently at an F. Shared Hope International.
• Main problem is on Oahu — 150 brothels — anywhere from 3-15 girls
living in brothel.
• Past legislation from Ige's administration introduced a bill.
• CSW should discuss whether we want to partner and in what ways
would we partner? What are our options? Is it advertising to support
an event already in place by another organization? Another
consideration is to partner with schools by asking administrators to
identify top 3 teachers to attend the training to learn what the signs,
behaviors and activities are to look for.
• Dr. George Rhodes from UH Hilo was initiating training.
• Melody Stone has also started training via Hawaii Island Coalition
against Human Trafficking. Potential activity for Brooke and Lee -
Ann to attend since being involved with NACW.
• CSW can also become more active in supporting bills.

Action: Brooke to gather information from Kaleo Schnider on what areas we as
CSW could assist. Kaleo offered to visit us and conduct training on
what to look for. Form committee next month.
H. Inauguration
• "Chairman" of the Hawaii County Council Valerie Poindexter. The
County could potentially take a more proactive role in using
appropriate titles.
• Suggested that the CSW consider a draft for Hawaii County to be
aware of appropriate use of titles.
IX. OLD BUSINESS
A. Calendar of Events

Discussed a specific day to meet for 2017 calendar.
B. One Rising
C. By -Laws
• Recirculation
Action: Farrah send by-laws; CSW to vote on whether we need corresponding
secretary.
X. ANNOUNCEMENTS
A. Next Meeting
• January 19, 2017 @ 9:30am via video conference.
• Cyd introduced "Tits the Turtle" healthy relationships program's
anti -bully project started by a young girl in Kau. It is a storybook
and video production. Cyd inquired if CSW would consider being
a partial sponsor for the project. Funding estimate for total project
cost is $15,000. Consideration for CSW to support in the range of
$50041000 was posed.
• Funding would need to be discussed since current funding is allocated.
Additional discussion needed to see where funds may be available
from.
Action: Look at $385 for equal pay. Jewel and Deb to discuss supporting Kau
project if no funding is needed for teen dating violence.
Action: CSW members to bring available meeting dates.
XI. ADJOURNMENT
A. Jewel motioned to adjourn, Deb seconded. No discussion. Meeting
adjourned at 11:39am.
