HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-08-26 Pension Board Meeting MinutesMinutes Regular Meeting of the Pension Board August 26, 2019 County Building, First Floor — Council Room, Hilo, Hawai`i CALL TO ORDER: The quarterly meeting of the Pension Board was called to order at 1:35 p.m. by Vice -Chair Emma Sousa. ROLL CALL: Present: Emma Sousa, Vice -Chair Mae Ikeda, Member Irma Sumera, Member Absent & Excused: Nyala Neill, Chair Jerry Hamamoto, Member Also Present: Jon Henricks, County Clerk, Ex -Officio Secretary Aaron Brown, Deputy County Clerk Deanna Sako, Finance Director, Ex -Officio Treasurer Craig Masuda, Deputy Corporation Counsel (came in later) Kay Oshiro, Controller, Finance Department Linda Young, Payroll Specialist II, Finance Department Dee Torres, Secretary, Office of the County Clerk -Council Haku Keli`i, Administrative Assistant, Office of the County Clerk -Council STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC ON AGENDA ITEMS: (There were none.) APPROVAL OF MINUTES: November 26, 2018 Ms. Ikeda moved to approve the minutes of November 26, 2018. Seconded by Ms. Sumera. The motion was carried by the following vote: AYES: Board Members Ikeda, Sumera, and Vice -Chair Sousa — 3. NEW BUSINESS: 1. Vice -Chair Sumera proceeded with the application for pension from the County of Hawaii for Mrs. Frances L. Alpiche, widow of Peter Alpiche (retired County of Hawai`i Parks and Recreation Band Member). Ms. Sumera made a motion to approve the pension application of Mrs. Alpiche. Seconded by Ms. Ikeda. The motion was carried by the following vote: AYES: Board Members Ikeda, Sumera, and Vice -Chair Sousa — Vice -Chair Sousa asked if there was any discussion regarding the Pension Application. There was none. 2. Ms. Young of Accounts (Payroll) distributed the August 23, 2019, County of Hawai`i Pensioners' statistics for review and discussion purposes. (Attached). There was no discussion, and Vice -Chair Sousa thanked Ms. Young for her hard work and providing the information. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Mr. Henricks, County Clerk thanked Ms. Torres for her many years of excellent service, having a great attitude and being very organized, as she will be transitioning from her current position. And Ms. (Haku) Keli`i, Administrative Assistant will be assuming the position of secretary to the Pension Board. Vice -Chair Sousa added, on behalf of the Hawai`i County Pension Board, that the board would also like to thank Ms. Torres for being very efficient and pleasant and has kept them on their toes. Although Ms. Torres has been promoted and will be leaving the Pension Board, Vice -Chair Sousa felt confident that the board is left in good hands with Ms. Keli`i. Ms. Torres also thanked the board members and staff for volunteering their time, and thanked Ms. Keli`i for her willingness to assume the duties as Pension Board Secretary. Ms. Torres also thanked the Clerk and Deputy Clerk for attending today's meeting. Vice -Chair Sousa stated, although her along with others volunteer to serve on the board, this is their way of giving back to say, "Thank you," to the County of Hawai`i. Vice -Chair Sousa announced that the next quarterly Pension Board meeting will be held on Monday, November 25, 2019, at 1:30 p.m., in the Council Chambers pertaining to New Elections for 2019-2020. ADJOURNMENT: Ms. Ikeda made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Seconded by Ms. Sumera.
