Dear Chairman Arakaki,
SUBJECT: Bi11220, Comm. 687, Relating to Exceptional Trees
Gardenia Remyi - TMK 2-3-29:02 Waianuenue Avenue &
Monkey Pod Tree - 2-6-12:10 Alae Cemetery)
Attached is a copy of a letter, dated August 23, 2000, from Department of
Parks & Recreation Director J. Tulang to the Arborist Advisory Committee
requesting that the Monkey Pod Tree at Alae Cemetery not be recommended
for Exceptional Tree status due to impacts from the tree's root system on
surrounding grave sites. As you know, the Council's Planning Committee
addressed Bi11220 when this specific issue was raised. Subsequently, action
was deferred on the bill pending discussion between the Department of
Parks & Recreation, the Arborist Advisory Committee and the Hilo Outdoor
Circle to determine what, if any, alternatives could resolve this situation.

Re: Exceptional Tree Designation of Monkeypod Tree at Alae Cemetery
Dear Chairman and Members:
We have concerns about the monkeypod tree being designated as an Exceptional Tree,
per Chapter 14, Article 10, Hawaii County Code.
Admittedly, the subject tree has aesthetic value. However, its root system impacts
surrounding grave sites and, at some future date, a decision will have to be made to either
remove or relocate the tree or relocate the affected grave sites. Root pruning does not
appear to be a solution to the problem.
For the above reason, we are requesting that the subject tree not be recommended for
Exceptional Tree status.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
J~e Tula
