HomeMy WebLinkAboutCharter Commission Fact Sheet 2018 (2) CHARTER COMMISSION Purpose: To study and review the Hawai‘i County Charter beginning in 1989 and every tenth year thereafter. Authority: Hawai'i County Charter, Section 15-3, titled Mandatory Charter Review., and Chapter 50, Hawai‘i Revised Statutes. Appointment: Mayor, with Council approval. Members shall hold office until the amendments or charter are ratified or rejected. Full Membership: Eleven (11) members. Specific Representation: No more than six shall belong to the same political party. Membership shall be representative of the various geographical areas of Puna, Kaū, Kona, Kohala, ʻ Hāmākua, and Hilo. Requirements: Hold at least one public hearing in each of the geographical areas of Puna, Ka‘ū, Kona, Kohala, Hāmākua, and Hilo. Meetings: Unless otherwise specified, regular meetings will be held on the second Friday of each month, alternating between Hilo and Kailua-Kona, to convene at 1:30 p.m. Financial Disclosure: Members must file Financial Disclosure within 20 working days of taking the oath of office. Thereafter, annual disclosures must be filed on or before January 31. The disclosures are confidential and will be kept on file by the Board of Ethics. County Code, Chapter 2, Section 2-91.1. Qualities: Respected by the community as being community-minded and oriented. Able to focus on the community needs as a whole without catering to special or self- interest.
