Roy Takemoto Managing Director Harry Kim Mayor Barbara J. Kossow Deputy Managing Director March 9, 2020 Senator Lorraine R. Inouye, Chair Senator Breene Harimoto, Vice Chair Committee on Transportation Dear Chair Inouye, Vice Chair Harimoto, and Committee Members: RE: HB 2598, HD1 Relating to Abandoned and Derelict Vehicles On your agenda is HB 2598, HD1 dealing with abandoned vehicles. I thank the Legislature for continuing to try to solve this perennial problem, and I want to express my support. HB 2598, HD1 would set up a Task Force to make recommendations. Since this problem is one of long standing, and seems to affect every jurisdiction, maybe bringing people together will result in some practical solutions. The bill calls for involvement of the police departments, which is good; and I am pleased that a Mayor now, under HD1, will be able to designate a representative from a county department that deals with the actual disposal of vehicles, which in Hawaiʻi County is the Department of Environmental Management. Please give HB 2598, HD1 your favorable vote. Respectfully Submitted, Harry Kim MAYOR
