Roy Takemoto Managing Director Harry Kim Mayor Barbara J. Kossow Deputy Managing Director March 13, 2020 Representative Chris Lee, Chair Representative Joy A. San Buenaventura, Vice Chair Committee on Judiciary Dear Chair Lee, Vice Chair San Buenaventura, and Committee Members: RE: SB 2619, SD1 Making an Appropriation to the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney for Hawaiʻi County The Hawaiʻi County Career Criminal prosecution unit has a track record of success, and for years has been a valued part of our law enforcement effort. It was previously funded by the State, and we depend on your financial support for this State- mandated program. SB 2179, SD1 makes a similar request for City and County. I see that as an indication that the value of a Career Criminal unit is recognized statewide. I urge that such units be adequately funded, both through SB 2619, SD1 before you today, and in your State budget proposal when that is made. Whether called a grant-in-aid, a subsidy, or something else, the money will be wisely spent. Respectfully Submitted, Harry Kim MAYOR
