New Year Brings Changes
As we are well on our way into the New Year, 2020 itself will bring with it many new changes. Not
only did we celebrate the beginning of a new year, 2020 also begins the start of a new decade. Just
as each new year marks the beginning of a cycle of new events, so each new decade begins the
cycle of events that happen once every ten years. We, at the Office of Aging would like to share
with you, two very important events that the year 2020 will usher in.
First, beginning with the 2020 Elections, no polling places will be
established. During last State Legislative session, the State Legislature
passed a bill changing election procedures to mailed ballots beginning
with the 2020 Election year. This means that not just individuals voting
absentee will receive mail ballots. With some exceptions, all individual will
receive mail ballots. Also, in place of polling places each county will
establish voter service centers. Please take the opportunity now to
visit www.elections.hawaii.gov. For language assistance, you may call the Office of
Elections at: 808-453-VOTE (8683).
Second, with the start of a new decade a new census will be taken. Every ten years our nation
conducts the Decennial Census, managed and implemented by the U.S. Department of Commerce,
Bureau of the Census. We may at times ask ourselves what is the purpose of the census, and how
important is it? The information gathered through the census, is used to get a broader sense about
the population in general. This information then is used to calculate the number of seats that each
state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives. The information is also used to determine
which communities and programs will receive federal funding, and how much. One of these
programs that are impacted by the census are programs that provide services to the elderly.
Finally, with the first month of 2020 behind us it will not be long until these two events will be upon
us. The Office of Aging would like to encourage each one to learn and be informed about the new
vote by mail election procedure. Every vote counts! Please be a part of the process. Also, please
participate in the 2020 Census. Every individual counts! The final count will impact us all for the
next ten years. By participating in both events, we will have a part in shaping the future for our
country, state, and county.
