HomeMy WebLinkAbout2020-06-20 Local Earthquake - No Tsunami Threat CIVIL DEFENSE AGENCY Date: Saturday, June 20, 2020 MEDIA UPDATE Time: 4 PM Frequency: Once Update #: 1 Incident: Local Earthquake — No Tsunami Threat This is a Civil Defense Local Earthquake message for Saturday afternoon, June 20th. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reports the earthquake which occurred at approximately 3:49 PM in the vicinity of the Southwest Rift Zone of Kilauea Volcano was not large enough to cause a tsunami for the Island of Hawaii. I say again, there is NO TSUNAMI THREAT to the Island of Hawaii. Preliminary data indicates that the earthquake measuring a magnitude of 4.0 was centered in the vicinity of Southwest Rift Zone of Kilauea Volcano. As in all earthquakes, be aware of the possibility of after-shocks. If the earthquake was strongly felt in your area, precautionary checks should be made for any damages; especially to utility connections of Gas, Water, and Electricity. Again, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reports the earthquake that occurred at approximately 3:49 PM was not large enough to cause a tsunami for the Island of Hawaii.
