Mr. Yee,
I am a resident of Kapa'au. I want urge the planning department to eliminate the
urban designation for Mahukona. I have camped there with my family, taught my
daughter how to fish with a bamboo pole in the bay,and how to ride a bike on the
old railroad right of way. I still launch my kayak from the dock and occasionally just
go for a swim in the bay. Mahukona is the most convenient safe place to swim in the
ocean for the residents of North Kohala. The dock is crowded almost every evening
with North Kohala residents who gather to watch the sunset And Mahukona is
historically and culturally significant Such that it has been on the PONC list for 12
years (Currently#4).
Mahukona is not an appropriate location for a resort development. And does not
meet the goals or recommendations of the North Kohala Community Development
Plan. Putting the resort there, and without adequate setbacks (1000 to 2,00(1
meters) will put undue pressure on the reef and near-shore ecosystem already
struggling with coral bleaching and warming ocean water.
I'm sure you could tell by the response to your talk story and "post-it"event at the
Kohala Courthouse a few weeks ago the community is quite unified in its desire to
keep the funky, old style, historical and cultural gem of Mahukona, and have the
urban designation removed.
Mahalo,
