This is a Hurricane Douglas informational message for Saturday, July 25, at 1:00 in the
afternoon.
As of 11:00am, Saturday the center of Hurricane Douglas was approximately 325 miles east of
Hilo at latitude 19.5N and longitude 150.1W, moving in a West Northwest direction at a speed
of about 18 miles-per-hour. Strongest sustained winds are estimated at 90 miles-per-hour
with higher gusts. Be aware that hurricanes are erratic and can change speed, direction, and
intensity quickly.
Due to the position, strength, and movement of Hurricane Douglas the following advisories
have been issued by the Central Pacific Hurricane Center:
A Hurricane Watch issued for the Island of Hawaii continues. A hurricane watch means
there is a good possibility of Hurricane conditions of damaging winds, surf, and flooding
rains occurring anytime within 48 hours.
A High Surf Warning is now in effect for Hawaii Island. Dangerous large breaking waves
of 15-25 feet may occur on East facing shores.
A Flash Flood Watch is now in effect for Hawaii Island. A Flash Flood Watch means that
conditions are favorable for flash flooding.
The following public safety measures and recommendations are now in effect:
For the Eastside of Hawaii Island all ocean and coastal recreation activities should be
cancelled until the danger has passed.
Boat and aircraft owners should take measures to secure their vessels. Do complete these
measures before night fall.
All field observation reports show normal conditions at this time.
There are No evacuation orders at this time.
