HomeMy WebLinkAboutBoard of Appeals Fact Sheet BOARD OF APPEALS 01-14-2026 Purpose: To hear and determine all appeals from the final decisions of the Planning Director or the Director of Public Works regarding matters within their respective jurisdictions. Authority: Hawaii County Charter, Section 6-9.2. Appointment: Mayor with Council approval. Normal five-year staggered terms. Full Membership: Seven members. Specific Representation: None required. Requirements: No more than four shall belong officially to the same political party. Each member shall be a legal resident and a registered voter of the county. The Board shall be part of the Planning Department for administrative purposes. Meetings: Generally, once a month on the second Friday of the month, 9:30 a.m., alternately between Hawaii County Council Chambers in Hilo and West Hawaii Civic Center in Kona. Financial Disclosure: Members must file Financial Disclosure within 20 working days of taking the oath of office. Thereafter, annual disclosures must be filed on or before January 31. The disclosures are confidential and will be kept on file by the Board of Ethics. County Code, Chapter 2, Section 2-91.1. Reappointment: Following the expiration of a term, no member may be reappointed for at least two years. Qualities: Respected by the community as being community-minded and oriented. Able to focus on the community needs as a whole without catering to special or self-interest. Board membership shall be representative of the community, and, whenever possible, persons with background or expertise in broad areas of planning and construction shall be given preference, although such knowledge is not a prerequisite for membership.
