Grant Agreement # C.008221
This past year was challenging due to COVID-19 protocols and restrictions; however, we were
able to continue our project initiatives and complete our timeline goals.
Kohanaiki Ohana has previously installed educational welcome signage at the entryways to
help inform residents and visitors alike about the unique and delicate coastal ecosystem.
These signs highlight the endangered flora and fauna
project. The area along the main entryway has been cleared of invasive species. This
work has included building passive rock barriers to keep vehicle use on the road and planting
guilds of native species on both sides to create a 100% native plant area. Our goal in this is to
show visitors and residents what coastlines may have looked like prior to colonization. This
also helps to create habitat for native fauna, especially the Hawaiian Yellow Faced Bee. The
entryway planting area hosts native groundcovers, intermixed with native shrubs and trees.
The attractive silver and green foliage, along with the colorful and aromatic native flowers,
help beautify the front entryway, and attract people to read the signage.
It is our goal that by having a clear and healthy example of native plants, that community
members and visitors can continue to learn and recognize native species and understand
their importance along the coastal strand. By enhancing the entryway environment, we are
setting an example for the rest of the beach to grow into. Our team regularly weeds,
monitors, and waters these areas.

DAWRF COCONUTS ALONG SHORELINE FOR COASTAL EROSION MITIGATION
driven
rising Sea Levels. This causes sand along the shoreline to shift, as well as flooding in low lying
areas. Hawaii experienced several coastal flooding events in 2020, mostly during large swells
mixed with king tides. In West Hawaii, anchialine ponds are increasing in size, and some new
ones are emerging with the rising sea level.
-road vehicle
eline. To
help mitigate these erosion issues, Kohanaiki Ohana has been planting native trees like Naio,
and Dwarf coconuts along shoreline. Additional native ground covers are planted around
trees to help stabilize sand between them.
Dwarf coconuts where hand selected by Mason Myrmo and sprouted in our nursery to get
established. Trees have now become a few feet tall and are being planted along the mauka
portion of the coastal beach crest. Out planted trees are spaced every 25-30 feet. Our team
waters them regularly to get them and native ground covers established, and continues to
weed invasive species out of the established areas.
MONITOR MAIAPILO, PRUNE BACK BRANCHES AND REMOVE INVASIVES
Maiapilo, both the established individuals as well as the recently planted individuals which
were propagated at our nursery, are thriving along the O'oma coastline. Some areas remain
too thick of heliotrope and keawe to monitor.
Additional small maiapilo plants are regularly discovered as the invasive plants are removed.
Great care is taken when pruning the understory to identify additional plants. Invasive
species are carefully pruned off of maiapilo. Heliotrope trees seem to harbor most young
maiapilo found at the beach park in their understory. Soil building leaves, shade, water
habitat for young maiapilo. Any maiapilo already in the sun have invasive species removed
around them within a distance of 2-3 feet. Small berms and stacked rocks have been placed
around maiapilo plants that are exposed to vehicle traffic for protection.
Directly out planted seeds are placed around maintained areas outside of off-road track, to
be able to monitor them when they sprout. Seeds brought to nursery are cleaned and then
soaked before putting into sprouting trays to be later out planted on-site.

Year End FINAL Report # C.008221
During the first quarter students from Innovations Public Charter School and West Hawaii
Explorations Academy (WHEA) weeded around native plants, participated in beach clean-up
activities and planted native ground covers, shrubs and trees.
During the second quarter, COVID-19 restricted the students from helping at 'O'oma;
however, Kohanaiki 'Ohana volunteers and parents were able to continue to visit the site for
maintenance. While the beach was closed to the public, we were able to continue to
maintain and expand planting areas.
The beach experienced much higher levels of local traffic when re-opened over the summer,
possibly due to lack of employment or working from home. Our team paid special attention
to creating additional natural buffers to reduce damage from increased vehicle use. Although
vehicle use has increased, a greater sense of community stewardship has helped spread the
word of respecting the native habitat.
HYLAEUS BEE IDENTIFICATION WORKSHOPS AND MONITORING
identification
and ecology with both Innovations and WHEA students at the project site. Students were
able to walk the shoreline and identify the bees and their habitat. Activities included Hylaeus
bee count surveys, photo identification, photo uploads, invasive ant control and native host
plant guide in collaboration with Bishop Museum Pollinators in Paradise Program.
Caretakers have noticed an increase in public awareness around the Hawaiian Yellow faced
bees, mostly due to signage and public outreach. Re-introducing native flora has been a huge
success for creating additional pollen and nectar for bees. Endemic bees have been observed
on all native flowering plants.
Beachgoers interested in Hawaiian Yellow Faced Bees are encouraged to use the Naturalist
App in partnership with Pollinators in paradise to learn more about native pollinators and
upload photos of pollinators in the beach park to help contribute to research.
PROPAGATE NATIVE COASTAL PLANTS WITH STUDENTS IN NURSERY
st
During the 1 Quarter of 2020, Innovations Public Charter School students helped Mason
and Kohanaiki 'Ohana volunteers to propagate native coastal plants within the nursery. As
plants reach a certain level of maturity students helped prepare areas at the 'O'oma project
site for out-planting.

nd
During the 2 Quarter of 2020, COVID-19 prevented student volunteers from working in the
nursery, but Kohanaiki 'Ohana volunteers continued to participate in nursery maintenance
and propagation.
rd
Native coastal trees, shrubs, and ground covers continue to be regularly grown during the 3
and 4rth quarter. Sixty dwarf coconut trees have been sprouted and potted in the nursery to
help with our erosion control goals. Several Native trees have been added to our nursery
regular propagation, highlighting Naio and Wiliwili.
PREP COASTAL AREA FOR OUT-PLANTING, INVASIVE SPECIES REMOVAL
Prepping areas for out-planting continues with small groups of volunteers. These plantings
will help restore and enhance the native ecosystem, maintain the beach crest and mitigate
the effects of future high surf, and rising sea level that is depleting beach sand all
over coastlines in Hawaii.
As was the case for propagation, COVID-19 presented some challenges for volunteer help,
but Mason Myrmo was
while the beach park area was closed to the public. Upon the beach parks being re-opened,
we have continued to maintain our areas of native plants and continue to remove invasive
species while creating natural buffers to reduce vehicle traffic.
EXPAND PRUNING OF INVASIVE SPECIES WITH VOLUNTEER WORK GROUPS
Project coordinator has worked to keep the under-story pruned for shade and recreational
use of beach park goers. Care is also taken in pruning to enhance visibility of driving cars to
see pedestrians and vice versa. Invasive species are regularly removed from active areas.
Some areas have been cleared of invasive and selected for native plant restoration. Although
student and co-19 issues
have minimized the anticipated number of hours originally projected.
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES
Additional activities include Beach Clean-ups, Native plant surveys, identification and
propagation, Hylaeus bee monitoring, removal of invasive species, trimming under-story of
beach Heliotrope, hauling green waste and raking pathways, building passive rock barriers
around native plants close to beach roads.
