HomeMy WebLinkAboutEnvironmental Management Commission Fact SheetUpdated June 16, 2026 ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT COMMISSION FACT SHEET* PURPOSE: To advise the department on waste reduction strategies, recycling, litter control, community involvement, and other issues related to the functions of the department, and exercise any other powers related to the functions of the department delegated by ordinance. AUTHORITY: Hawaiʻi County Charter, Section 6-10.5. APPOINTMENT: Mayor with Council approval. Normal 5-year staggered terms. FULL MEMBERSHIP: Nine members. SPECIFIC REPRESENTATION: One member from each Council district. MEETINGS: Monthly from January to November, unless otherwise specified by the Commission. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURES: Members must file financial disclosures within 20 working days of taking office. Thereafter, annual disclosures must be filed on or before January 31. The disclosures are confidential and will be kept on file by the Board of Ethics. County Code, Chapter 2, Section 2-91.1. REAPPOINTMENT: Following the expiration of a term, no member may be reappointed for at least two years except for one- and two-year “termers.” QUALITIES: Respected by the community as being community-minded and oriented. Able to focus on the community needs as a whole without catering to a special interest or self-interest. CURRENT MEMBERS: May serve no more than 90 days past the expiration of their terms, or until a successor is confirmed, whichever is sooner.
