Subject: June 22, 2021 Open Space Testimony
Aloha,
My name is Simmy McMichael of West Hawaii Surfing Association since 1986.
Saving our Surf for the Future Generation.
The County Trust provision, enacted by county voters in 2010, is
quoted, Section 13-29, Hawaii County Charter to include "wahi pana," "surf spots" and Historic Sites.
I wanted to comment on the Open Space Network.
Attached are photos of Kahalu'u Makai, of Kamehameha School.
Taken down were the Kona Lagoon Hotel and the Keauhou Beach Hotel.
Now coming along is such a Beautiful Open Space, the Views from Ali'i Drive to the Ocean is
Breathtaking.
I wish all of Historic Ali'i Drive can someday be of this for the Future Generation, not 10 or 20 years, but,
forever.
The Sea Level is rising, predicted to rise 3.2 feet mid 21st century. But, Ali'i drive has already surpassed
this.
Some of my photos will show this. One in particular, of Kahalu'u Beach Park, the sewer in 2017 in the
ocean,
noted was 80 feet back only 20 years prior.
We should not allow anymore concrete buildings, or walls. Per DLNR, the real shoreline is Ali'i Drive,
center line.
CZM setback is now a minimum or 40 feet setback, UP to 1,000 feet.
We should strive to Preserve and Protect our Natural Resources, this will benefit the people, both local
and tourist.
Ali'i Drive is the last place we can save, stated by Nainoa Thompson.
I hope you will add All of Ali'i Drive is Historic, where the Kings, Chief, and Chiefess lived, and where they
Surfed.
The History of this Ali'i Drive, Archeology, Sacred Site, OPEN SPACE, WHILE PRESERVING!!
For the benefit of the present and future generation, conserve, protect Hawai'i Natural Beauty and all
Natural
Resources.
Mahalo,
Simmy
