The Planning Department and Jojo Tanimoto had a meeting on September 22, 2021, in which her public
testimony(emailed prior to September's South Kohala CDP AC meeting) was reviewed. Com .No. 2021-

Ms. Tanimoto wants to ensure the South Kohala CDP is more inclusive of the Kawaihae area, as well as
bring awareness to various changes and issues in the area. The Planning Department is grateful for Ms.
Tanimoto's advocacy and it has been noted that when the next CDP revision is scheduled, active
inclusion and updates will be collected for the Kawaihae area.
Ms. Tanimoto reviewed the following with the Planning Department:
• Kailapa Community Association (Hawaiian Homes) needs to be updated on the map (inaccurate
description)
• Kailapa's makai area has plans to make a park(they recently received a grant to manage portion
of the ahupua'a)
• Community events like the kupuna talk story, the celebration of Queen Lili'uokalani,and the
keiki fishing tournament should be promoted in the CDP (some of these are sponsored by the
Kailapa Association)
• Kawaihae Canoe Club should have representation in CDP
• There are flooding issues in drywells
• Noticeable changes and development occuring at Kawaihae Harbor
• She wants to know what the County's plan is for coastal management and/or guidelines for
Kawaihae and the boat harbor area
• Kawaihae gets their water from N. Kohala
• When there is a brush fire in Kawaihae,they take the water from the N. Kohala residence's
pools
• Volunteer fire station is in N. Kohala
• The entiretly of the Kailapa area was supposed to have water, but they can't get County water
past Honokoa bridge
