HomeMy WebLinkAboutCalvin Furtado - December 202101-9f#1,4 Certificate of Commendation Awarded to CAL VIN FURTADO, POLICE OFFICER II Officer of the Month, December 2021 On behalf of the citizens of the County of Hawai`i and the East Hawai`i Aloha Exchange Club, it is my honor to commend Officer Calvin Furtado, Police Officer II, Puna Patrol for this award, based on his professional work ethic, his ability to focus on the task at hand, his persistence in trying situations, and his dependability in the workplace. On December 14, 2021, Officer Furtado, on patrol in the Orchidland subdivision, received information on a location where a wanted fugitive was in hiding. The suspect was a person of interest in several stolen vehicle investigations, had outstanding warrants for revocation of probation, and had eluded capture on numerous occasions. Officer Furtado coordinated with his beat partner and approached the residence, catching the fugitive off-guard, within a 2006 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. The suspect was arrested for outstanding warrants without incident. Officer Furtado recognized the truck description from a prior auto theft report. He observed that the truck had fraudulent license plates and that the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the dashboard was blocked. Officer Furtado was able to identify the truck using the VIN sticker on the driver's door, which was left open by the suspect. Through records, Officer Furtado established that the truck was indeed the one reported stolen in August 2021 by a victim in Hawaiian Paradise Park. A subsequent search warrant executed on the truck uncovered a stolen credit card, illegal drugs, and drug paraphernalia. The suspect was charged with numerous offenses in connection with this investigation. Officer Furtado's initiative, cool demeanor, and detailed observation skills contribute to his positive impact on the Puna Community. He exemplifies the Hawai`i Police Department core values of Integrity, Professionalism, Compassion, Teamwork, and Community Satisfaction. Done this 27" day of January 2022. MITCHELL D. ROTH Mayor
