ALD WIN FRANCIS
On behalf of the residents of the County of Hawai`i, it is with aloha
and gratitude that we commend Aldwin Francis for his heroic actions in
pulling a visitor to safety at Akaka Falls State Park on January 6, 2022.
The unidentified sightseer disobeyed safety precautions and hopped
the fence to take photos of the free falling Akaka Falls, which plunges
into a stream-eroded gorge, when he slipped, dangling from the cliff edge.
Putting his own life in danger, Hilo 's own Aldwin Francis jumped
the fence and successfully pulled the man to safety, preventing him from
falling more than 400 feet into the abyss.
Although the man walked away without saying a word ofgratitude,
we recognize and acknowledge Aldwin for his courageous, selfless action,
and true heroism. He most certainly saved a life that day.
